The company designs and sells equipment that is innovative, durable and compact. It primarily serves the outdoor, travel and water sports sectors. But what is behind this extraordinary manufacturer from Australia and how did it all begin?
How it all began at Sea to Summit
The history of the Sea to Summit brand begins long before the company was founded in 1990. The two company founders Roland Tyson and Tim Macartney-Snape discovered their love of outdoor sports back in the 1970s. Independently of each other, they began climbing and scaling mountains. As Roland was always on the lookout for suitable and, above all, lightweight equipment, he designed and sewed some of his own gear very early on. He eventually opened a small outdoor shop in Perth called "Namche Bazar".
At this time, Tim was travelling on numerous expeditions in the Himalayas. In 1984, a lecture tour took him to Perth, where the two crossed paths. This encounter led to their first collaboration. At the time, Tim was planning a trip that would take him on skis from the Bay of Bengal across the Himalayas. As he still needed the right equipment, he asked Roland to design the missing items for him. Named after this expedition, Tim and Roland founded the outdoor brand Sea to Summit in 1990.
Features: Lightweight, functional and cool
"Perfection is not achieved when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away." Sea to Summit has written this quote from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry boldly on its banner. From the very beginning, the outdoor manufacturer from Perth has endeavoured to produce equipment that is functional, lightweight and durable. The aim is also to motivate people from different backgrounds to engage in outdoor activities and travelling. For this reason, Sea to Summit is constantly working to make life on the move easier, more organised and carefree with its products. The company's own design team is constantly looking for new materials and technologies to make the products even simpler and more efficient.
A good example of this are the sleeping mats from Sea to Summit with the patented Sprung Cells. This special technology not only ensures an incredible combination of comfort and weight. The Insulated version also has an impressive R-value of 4.2.
Core competences: Travelling, camping and trekking
Sea to Summit is primarily active in the areas of travelling, camping, outdoor and water sports. Innovative products such as ultra-light sleeping bags, innovative, foldable camping bowls and waterproof packsacks are just the tip of the iceberg. There is practically nothing here that does not exist. However, all products have one thing in common: they benefit from the decades of experience of their designers.
By working closely with material manufacturers and production companies, new materials and production methods are constantly being developed. This enables Sea to Summit to remain true to its own claim of producing lightweight, functional and cool equipment over the years.
Sustainability at Sea to Summit
Sea to Summit supports several environmental protection organisations such as Leave no Trace and Carbon Neutral. These organisations are primarily concerned with the responsible use of the environment and the resources required to manufacture the products. The manufacturer also seeks and finds ways to minimise its ecological footprint when it comes to the packaging of its equipment. Only recycled and recyclable materials are used in this area.
